THE CHURCHES OF OROSEI
The churches were built during the Roman age and are dedicated to several Saints
Orosei is famous for its wonderful coves as well as for its seventeen churches, that were built using simple forms and colours, false fronts, poor materials such as volcanic rocks and low-quality wood. The most suggestive of all of them are the church of San Giacomo Apostolo, the patron saint of the town, built during XIV century in the main square; the church of Nostra Signora del Rosario with its two beautiful statues of wood that represent the Holy Virgin and the Christ child; and lastly the Romanesque church, built entirely of volcanic stones, and dedicated to Saint Antony Abate. During the Holy Week all the churches in town will be decorated with flowers and will stay open to give visitors and believers the opportunity to see the artworks preserved inside each church.

SANTA MARIA ‘E MARE
Colorful feast where traditions and tastes give life to a sacred rite
The feast of Santa Maria ‘e Mare, celebrated on the last Sunday of May, is a deeply felt and fascinating day for the way the procession takes place: Sailing on the river Cedrine to the church built at the mouth of the river and dedicated to the mother. The preparation for the festival begins in Orosei in the People’s Square in the morning, with “sa muratura”, the decoration of the fishermen’s boats with colorful flowers. In the afternoon, the aligned boats carrying the Virgin Mary’s simulacrum begin their journey towards the church. The march continues on foot along the embankment, following the boats which line up at the height of the church leaving the one with the Holy Virgin in the center, the first which must touch the ground.

Worship place where history and religion are bound by an antic architecture
Pisana Tower of Saint Anthony Abate is located not far from the center of Orosei in a pen, which includes the homonymous church and the Palatzos Betzos complex. The historic capital of Southern Baronia, Orosei is almost flat on the slopes of a volcanic colle in the valley of the river Cedrino, from which the stone used for the construction of the buildings’ walls and of the “sas petras de sos camminos” (the pebbles which paved the roads and squares) was extracted in the past. The tower, which dates back to the first half of 1,200, is one of many of the many testimonies of the medieval heart of the country, such as the Palatzos Betzos neighborhood, which consists of old houses and a series of buildings in the 16th-17th century that surround the square.
